The hub consists of state-of-the-art laboratory spaces for foreign and local "technology-driven and knowledge-intensive companies. The most dominant sustainable technique is the roofscape of the "energy blanket," which combines passive and active systems. The interior volumes of the building are passively shaded by large overhangs, while mechanisms collect and reuse water, and both passive and active photovoltaic systems use solar energy. The passive and active systems will offset at least half of the operational energy costs of the building with this new roof.
The Innovation Hub is an enormous investment for the Botswanese government in an attempt to diversify its economy, which is based primarily on the extraction of diamonds, in order to move towards a "knowledge-based economy." Many wonders if the building and its location can attract the latest researchers with thousands of sq. ft. of office space to fill; however, their initiative to create an environmentally friendly haven tries to do just that.
